I am preparing to preach on Sunday, May 15th, which happens to be Pentecost Sunday. In our Young Adult Sunday School class we have begun slowly working our way through Acts. It just so happens to be that this has been great prep-work, because I’ve been reading commentary on Acts for the past month.
So I’m left pondering this:
What does Pentecost mean for us today?
Do we read the ancient story and memorialize the experience as idealistic yet unachievable?
Do we lament the loss of influence in contemporary culture, and rage against the post-Christian secular age that we live in?
Do we desperately plead for the Holy Spirit again?
Do we gather up our excuses for ‘why’ and ‘how’ things are just different now than they used to be?
Do we know what to do with Pentecost?
